Candles are tiny, held fires. They are lit to illuminate a corner, a text, an object, a THOUGHT. Primitive in nature, they awaken in us a feeling that transcends. The sixth sense. Their atmosphere transports us to introspection, to essence, to waiting, to contemplation, to reflection. To silence and its SOUND.
In a world that pushes us toward exhaustion, pausing to look at a candle is an act of resistance, just a single sliver, or dozens of them, in their different shapes, vibrations, DANCES, that make the invisible visible. Contained moments.
One after another, the candles that illuminate hidden places begin to fade. Slowly. Randomly. One remains. The one that persists, the one that illuminates that which must not cease to be seen, the one that reveals the unnamed. A traffic between the old and the new. A fluctuating border between light and darkness.
And then this last candle vanishes. The ephemeral ends. Space shifts. End of cycle. Transformation. From movement to repose. From tremor to calm. Pause.
“It is no longer darkness. It is beginning.”
A tap dance company founded in 2015 under the direction of Estefanía Porqueras, the company was born with the aim of liberating the body's movement and the conceptual expressiveness of this art form, distancing it aesthetically from mere entertainment and giving it a timeless appeal. Honoring its rhythmic roots and footwork patterns, it draws on its historical legacy of resilience and survival, stemming from the oppression of enslaved Africans in the United States, towards an organic and contemporary aesthetic, incorporating modern inspirations and choreographic writing.
In 2017, PULSE was created, the most representative duet piece of the project to date, which premiered in Croatia and has already been performed in countries such as Brazil and Panama.
In 2019, a compilation of works created since the project's inception was presented in Barcelona as a concert-performance, -SIGHTS- EXTENDED (2019 season), marking the end of this phase for the company. Since 2020, the project has incorporated psychosocial themes into its pieces, leading to the development of nuanced language and offering an artistic perspective on various contemporary concerns: emotional trauma of social origin (SUMMARY OF MEMORIES AND SCARS), communicative states, and social interaction, among others. The representative piece of this phase of the project is the production "Summary of Memories and Scars," which toured Spain thanks to the Redescena Dance Stage 2022 catalog and the support of INAEM, and also marked the beginning of the project's internationalization in Brazil.
In 2024, thanks to the support of the Goethe-Institut and the European funds Culture Moves Europe, the project, after two years of conceptualization, launched its new proposal, A·COS·O, at the tanzhaus NRW facilities in Düsseldorf (May 2024), continuing its research and creation at LAVA Valladolid (September 2025). This proposal marks a new phase for the project, in which hybridization with other disciplines serves to explore the concept of psychological and physical abuse.
